Like other surgical procedures vascular cases require universal basic sets of instrumentation including cutting, grasping, holding, search, removal and sutures, with Mourtey, (2018) suggesting general set of instruments with added vascular clamps would be sufficient for a femoral popliteal bypass. However, the vascular speciality does demand unique and specialist instrumentation to facilitate efficient and safe manipulation of delicate anatomy.

Clamps
When removing, attaching or cutting into sections of the artery the surgeon will need to stop the blood flow to that region. To do this, they will use clamps to constrict or occlude the vessel, it also needs to be atraumatic to avoid damaging the vessel. (Moutrey, 2018)

Scissors
While scissors are essential on all surgical instrument trays and are used for dissection both blunt and sharp (Moutrey, 2018) the vascular speciality needs more specifically designed scissors to allow for the cutting of vessels.

Forceps
Forceps are essential at grasping tissues to allow control of the anatomy to facilitate its careful dissection away from other anatomy (Moutrey, 2018) forceps are designed both atraumatic and traumatic.

Accessory Instruments
This section goes through some of the more specialised instrumentation that may be required for the completion of a femoral popliteal bypass.
